NASA ''Earth Survey' Hercules UNITED STATES CIVIL AIRCRAFT REGISTRY NA707NA LOCKHEED S/N 3507, C-130B, upgraded to C-130B/E/H, was owned and operated by the NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA) for over 35 years. NASA's ''Earth Survey' Hercules traveled all over the world Photographing the Earth, doing Scientific (LANDSAT) work, using Micro Imaging. the aircraft was equipped with four microwave radiometers, remote sensors, and other data acquiring devices. In 1995 NASA had to ground the aircraft due to ever increasing budget cuts. on September 28, 2000 the aircraft was flown from NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California to Tucson, Arizona to be mothballed and placed in long term preservation storage at Davis Monthan Air Force Base. On January 23 1969 NASA ''Earth Survey'' Hercules arrived at LTV Electrosystems, Inc., Greenville, Texas for an IRAN and modifications, the aircraft had at the time 491,1 total flying hours since new. LTV Electrosystems replaced NASA '' Earth Survey'’ original outer wings, with L-100/382B model outer wings part number 385019-91/-92, S/N 4109L & 4109R. These L-100/382B model outer wings had at the time 2,339 total flying hours since new, and had been removed from Zambia Air Cargoes Lockheed L-100 / 382B S/N 382-4109. These outer wings have the (hard points) attachments to install external long range fuel tanks. LTV Electrosystems also replaced the left and right center wing center trailing edge sections, vertical and horizontal stabilizers, flaps, ailerons, elevators and rudder. the outer wing panels at OWS 144.5 and 214.2 upper and lower were ultrasonically inspected and no cracks detected. A new Lockheed C-130H (H Model) Center Wing MEP S/N 12Y-463 was ordered by NASA, and in Nov 1971 / Feb 1972, Lockheed installed the new C-130H (H Model) Center Wing on NASA 'Earth Survey' The aircraft had at the time 1,384 total flying hours since new. In 1983 the entire C-130B nose landing gear system was replaced with an upgraded C-130H nose landing gear system. In 1989/1990 NASA ''Earth Survey'' Hercules was flown to Edmonton, Canada, for major maintenance, PDM, modification and corrosion work at NORTHWEST INDUSTRIES LIMITED, the aircraft had at the time 8,621 Total Hours Since New. Two of the engines were sent to Standard Aero at Winnipeg, Canada, where they were zero timed and upgraded from T56-A-7B toT56-A-15LFE Engines nacelles were completely refurbished. the oil cooler temperature sensing and control of oil cooler flap system was upgraded. the engine propeller system was upgraded with the Bata lights. The electrical system generators were upgraded with generator disconnects and bearing failure lights. For the first year after NASA 'Earth Survey' Hercules returned from Canada,it was flown with mixed engines. The inboard were -15's and the outboard engines were -7's. By 1991 when the aircraft flying season started the aircraft had T56-A-15LFE in all positions. NASA 'Earth Survey'' Hercules could now climb to 31,000 feet and cruise at 300 knots in a very short time. This very special and unique Hercules with no damage history of any kind, was never used as a C-130 military tactical / cargo transport aircraft, short range logistic, or for pilot training, and especially never as a C-130 low-level training aircraft performing military tactical training missions such as : touch and goes, simulated air drops, search and rescue, or simulated short field take-offs an landings, etc. NASA 'Earth Survey' C-130 Hercules has never landed on rough terrain airfields or runways, but always on secure airfields with good runways and taxiways. it was used by NASA as of 1969 (when the aircraft had less than 500 hours since factory new) only and exclusively for Scientific work as a medium altitude long range aircraft to Photograph the Earth. It is in exceptional condition with a very low airframe total time of 9,759 flying hours since new, and 5,465 total landings (cycles) since new. The new replaced C-130H (H Model) MEP Center Wing has only 8,375 Total Fight Hours Since New, and the replaced L-100/C-130E Outer Wings have only 11,607 Total Flying Hours Since New. NASA has meticulously and impeccably maintained, operated, modified and consistently upgraded NASA ''Earth Survey'' C-130B to essentially become a logistically practical and highly efficient combination of a C-130B/E/H model Hercules. This historical NASA Hercules has an abundance of detailed (numerous boxes) historical, operational, rework, maintenance, and flight records. the aircraft is presently in deep preservation storage in the arid U.S. desert climate.
